Although it is a natural element, its accumulation in enclosed spaces can pose a serious health risk, as it is considered one of the leading causes of lung cancer after smoking. For this reason, in Sardinia\u2014as in the rest of Italy\u2014the management of radon in workplaces is regulated by specific legislation aimed at ensuring safe and legally compliant environments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"623\" data-end=\"671\"><strong data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"669\">Regulatory Context and Legal Framework<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong data-start=\"672\" data-end=\"729\">Legislative Decree No. 101\/2020 and Euratom Directive<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"731\" data-end=\"937\">Legislative Decree No. 101 of July 31, 2020, implementing Directive 2013\/59\/Euratom, is the primary legislative reference on this matter. It sets the following limits for average annual radon concentration:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"939\" data-end=\"1100\">\n<li data-start=\"939\" data-end=\"991\">\n<p data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"991\"><strong data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"954\">300 Bq\/m\u00b3<\/strong> for existing homes and workplaces.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1050\">\n<p data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"1050\"><strong data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"1007\">200 Bq\/m\u00b3<\/strong> for homes built after December 31, 2024.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1051\" data-end=\"1100\">\n<p data-start=\"1053\" data-end=\"1100\"><strong data-start=\"1053\" data-end=\"1067\">6 mSv\/year<\/strong> of effective dose in workplaces.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1102\" data-end=\"1137\">Therefore, the provisions apply to:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1324\">\n<li data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1166\">\n<p data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1166\">Underground workplaces.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1167\" data-end=\"1226\">\n<p data-start=\"1169\" data-end=\"1226\">Semi-basement or ground-floor spaces in priority areas.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1227\" data-end=\"1324\">\n<p data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1324\">Specific facilities such as hydroelectric plants, thermal spas, and water treatment facilities.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1331\" data-end=\"1372\"><strong data-start=\"1335\" data-end=\"1372\">Radon in Sardinia: Priority Areas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In this regard, the Regional Council of Sardinia has identified <a href=\"https:\/\/radon-sardegna.it\/en\/radon-in-sardegna-comuni-delle-aree-prioritarie\/\"><strong data-start=\"1438\" data-end=\"1460\">162 municipalities<\/strong> as <strong data-start=\"1464\" data-end=\"1482\">priority areas<\/strong> for radon monitoring<\/a>, officially published in the Official Gazette on <strong data-start=\"1553\" data-end=\"1573\">October 14, 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1581\" data-end=\"1613\"><strong data-start=\"1585\" data-end=\"1611\">Employers\u2019 Obligations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1644\">Measurement and Monitoring<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1879\">To ensure a safe working environment, employers are required to complete measurements of the average annual radon concentration <strong data-start=\"1774\" data-end=\"1794\">within 24 months<\/strong> from the start of business operations or the publication of the priority areas list.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1881\" data-end=\"2362\">\n<li data-start=\"1881\" data-end=\"2068\">\n<p data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1917\"><strong data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1916\">If levels are below 300 Bq\/m\u00b3<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1920\" data-end=\"2068\">\n<li data-start=\"1920\" data-end=\"1974\">\n<p data-start=\"1922\" data-end=\"1974\">Employers must keep the results for <strong data-start=\"1958\" data-end=\"1973\">eight years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1977\" data-end=\"2068\">\n<p data-start=\"1979\" data-end=\"2068\">Measurements must be repeated every <strong data-start=\"2015\" data-end=\"2030\">eight years<\/strong> or after significant structural work.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2362\">\n<p data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2103\"><strong data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2102\">If levels exceed 300 Bq\/m\u00b3<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2106\" data-end=\"2362\">\n<li data-start=\"2106\" data-end=\"2170\">\n<p data-start=\"2108\" performed by a radiation protection expert.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2412\"><strong data-start=\"2373\"
